The Issue

Bullying has devastating effects on children, leading to long-term psychological damage, including depression, anxiety, self harm and suicidal thoughts. Many victims face horrific bullying and harassment from gangs of teenagers who do not receive appropriate support at home.

Victims often feel too scared to report their experiences to the police due to fears of retaliation or disbelief. This silence perpetuates the cycle of abuse and allows bullies to operate without consequence.

Many children under the age of 16 believe they are invincible and will not face serious repercussions for their actions. This mindset allows them to engage in bullying and other criminal behaviours without fear of significant consequences.

All children, should receive comprehensive education on personal boundaries and the importance of appropriate behaviour.

Family members who encourage or support bullying through threats or social media should also face sanctions, including mandatory education programs and community service.

There must be a system in place to ensure that if a child is accused of sexual abuse or assault and further allegations arise, any previously closed or inadequately filed cases should be reopened and consolidated. This approach would allow for a more comprehensive understanding of the offender's behavior and a stronger case for prosecution.

The current legal framework allows too many sexual offenders to evade appropriate consequences. Sentences are often insufficient for the lifelong damage caused to victims. We demand that sexual offenses against children be treated with the utmost seriousness, ensuring swift legal action and appropriate sentencing.

Proposed Changes:

1. Accountability for Bullying:

   - Extend sanctions to include family members who encourage or support bullying behaviors.

   - Implement educational programs for families on the impacts of bullying and the importance of positive behavior.

   - Allow Child Services to treat bullying incidents as safeguarding issues, ensuring that all involved receive necessary support.

2. Stricter Sanctions for Sexual Offenders:

   - Increase prison sentences for sexual offenders for those who harm children.

   - Streamline the legal process to prioritise cases involving child abuse, ensuring quicker resolutions and reducing waiting times for victims.

   - Develop additional resources and support systems to prevent delays in prosecution and to provide immediate help for victims.

3. Sanctions for Under-16 Offenders:

   - Implement a system where children under 16 who engage in bullying or other criminal behaviours face appropriate sanctions, recognising that repeated offenses should lead to escalating consequences.

   - Encourage police to take consistent action on cases involving the same offenders, ensuring that the more they bully, the more serious the repercussions.

4. Cohesive Police Response to Sexual Abuse Cases:

   - Establish protocols for reopening and consolidating cases of sexual abuse or assault involving minors. If a new allegation arises against a child previously accused, all prior cases should be reviewed and considered as part of a comprehensive investigation.

   - Ensure that law enforcement agencies are trained in handling sensitive cases involving minors, focusing on victim support and thorough investigations.

5. School Safety and Support for Victims:

   - Ensure that schools are safe spaces for children, where victims of bullying should not be forced to change schools. Instead, bullies should face consequences, such as being moved to alternative educational settings and spending time in isolation.

   - Implement life skills programs in schools that teach empathy, respect, and healthy relationships from a young age.

   - Establish anonymous reporting systems in schools, allowing children to report bullying or abuse without fear of retaliation.

Conclusion:

We demand that our government takes immediate action to protect our children from bullying and sexual abuse. It is time to hold both families and offenders accountable, ensuring a safer environment for all children. We must create a culture where abuse is not tolerated, and victims feel safe and supported in coming forward.
