As a Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG), I have personally faced numerous challenges in my journey to becoming a licensed doctor in India. I have appeared for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) eight times and have witnessed the struggles that come with it. The lack of transparency in the examination process and the absence of a compensation mechanism for candidates who invest their time, money, and effort into preparing for these exams are disheartening.

The FMGE is an essential gateway for FMGs to practice medicine in India, requiring them to prove their knowledge and skills. However, the exam has consistently been criticised for its lack of transparency in the evaluation process and the unclear pattern of question-setting. This uncertainty creates additional anxiety and stress among candidates who have already spent significant time and resources training abroad to fulfil their dreams of contributing to healthcare in India.

Moreover, the persistence of 'hidden' agendas, such as inconsistent passing rates and frequent changes in exam patterns without prior notice, further erodes trust. It's imperative that the National Board of Examinations (NBE) adopts a more transparent approach. Publishing detailed information regarding passing criteria, exam format, and previous years' question papers would provide much-needed clarity and assurance to examinees.

In addition, while some candidates can afford multiple attempts, many FMGs face financial difficulties due to the high costs associated with the process. This is particularly unfair for students from middle and lower-income families, who are already burdened by the expenses incurred during their overseas education. Therefore, introducing a compensation or financial assistance program to support FMGs through their FMGE attempts is essential.

We urge the authorities to:
1. Implement a more transparent evaluation process that includes sharing passing criteria and previous question papers.
2. Establish a compensation framework for FMGs, particularly those who struggle financially.
3. Regularly review and publicly discuss the FMGE process to ensure it aligns with the needs and realities of medical graduates today.
