The Issue

After doing research for our Catholic Advocacy Initiative project, we were shocked to learn how many people in First Nations communities across Canada still live without clean drinking water. Many boil water advisories have lasted over 20 years. This has led to entire generations growing up without reliable access to something as basic as safe water.

This is a serious problem that we need to address, especially in communities across Canada. It is a serious violation of human rights and human dignity. Every person deserves clean, safe drinking water, yet for many First Nations communities, this remains out of reach. Despite repeated government promises, progress has been too slow and has not had much impact.

Today, long-term drinking water advisories continue to affect over ten thousand people. This crisis impacts health, education, economic opportunities, and overall quality of life - Many people suffer from waterborne diseases and illnesses in these communities. It creates preventable struggles that no community in Canada should have to face.

We are calling on the Canadian government to take immediate action by funding and upgrading water infrastructure, supporting long-term maintenance, and ensuring solutions are led by Indigenous communities.

Clean water is a right, not a privilege. Sign this petition and stand with First Nations communities in demanding safe drinking water for everyone.
