Demand Choice, Accessibility, and Freedom in Our School Library

The Issue

My passion is reading, particularly history books. But my opportunity to satiate this passion is limited by the school library's strict rules. I end up feeling restricted and jealous of the freedom other students in other schools enjoy. The inability to borrow books for personal enrichment, not just for educational purposes, is a hindrance we should not have to deal with, especially since a library is meant to be an invitation to explore knowledge, not a prison that locks it away.

It is known that reading broadens the mind - a fundamental part of education. A study from the University of Virginia found that free voluntary reading contributed significantly to academic success across various subjects (Brook, 2010). Our school library does not fully support this academic advantage, limiting us to a narrow range of books and denying us the freedom to read whenever we desire.

Every student should have the opportunity to borrow from a diverse selection of books freely, as afforded to students in other schools. The library should offer an inviting environment for both studying and recreational reading. These changes will not just improve our educational achievement but also our mental well-being.

Join me in calling for an end to the restrictive policies of our school library. Let us stand united for more book choices, less strict borrowing rules, and a free and welcoming library environment. Please, sign and share this petition.
