Demand change to the Building Safety Act, to include funding for sub-11m cladding removal
The Issue
As a leaseholder involved in the unfolding cladding scandal, I am facing the crippling financial burden that comes with being forced to pay a minimum of £70,000 to remove dangerous cladding from our building. Our block of flats falls just under 11 meters, a height that the current Building Safety Act, 2022 neglects to include for remediation funding. This oversight puts us in a precarious situation: the government recognizes the need for remediation but withholds the necessary funding, threatening to bankrupt us all and dramatically altering our lives.
The government's own assessment has identified our building as requiring immediate remediation for safety. Why, then, is financial support being withheld on the basis of arbitrary height restrictions? The very legislation designed to protect residents is, in its current form, failing many. Thousands of leaseholders in buildings like ours across the UK are facing similar financial distress due to this oversight. The cladding crisis doesn't discriminate by a few meters, and nor should the solution.
The costs estimated for remediation are ruinous, far beyond what ordinary families can afford. These expenses could lead to a wave of bankruptcies, forcible sales, and devastated communities if the government does not amend the legislation to include buildings below 11 metres in height.
We are calling for a vital change in legislation. We urge the government to adjust the Building Safety Act, 2022, to ensure financial assistance for cladding removal is available to all affected buildings, regardless of height. With this change, countless leaseholders will be spared from financial ruin, and their homes made safe without incurring unmanageable costs.
Let us stand together in solidarity. By signing this petition, you are not only supporting those immediately affected, but also sending a message that safety and fairness cannot and should not have arbitrary limits. Please sign this petition to demand a fair and equitable solution for all leaseholders at risk. Every signature counts in pushing for legislative change that protects all residents equally.
