Demand Camden Council stops barbecues in waterlow park

The Issue

We urge Camden Council to put an end to barbecues in Waterlow Park.

Waterlow Park serves as a tranquil retreat for relaxation and leisure. The smoke, and overcrowding caused by these gatherings detract from the intended purpose of the park, and deter visitors who seek solace and tranquility.  The Park was established by Sir Sydney Waterlow as a "garden for the gardenless". He did not intend it to be a kitchen for the kitchenless.

The smoke and fumes from these barbecues is harming to the local environment and public health as well as encroaching onto adjacent Highgate Cemetery. According to a study by the Environmental Protection Agency, burning charcoal releases toxic chemicals such as carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde into the air. As we know, these pollutants can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and even cancer.

Furthermore, the use of disposable and semi-professionmal barbecue grills is contributing to our already overwhelming waste problem. The Marine Conservation Society reports that over 13 million disposable barbecues are used in the UK each year, many of which end up in our oceans and harm marine life.

In addition to these environmental concerns, there have been numerous incidents of fires caused by careless use of barbecues in other parks across London. In 2018 alone, London Fire Brigade responded to over 200 grass fires caused by barbecues.

We urge Camden Council to take action now. There many other ways for people to enjoy Waterlow Park without putting their health or the environment at risk. We ask that you ban all types of barbecue equipment from this public space immediately.

Thank you for your attention on this important matter.
