Demand Buffalo State University to Provide On-Campus Translator Services

The Issue

I work on campus with Student Leadership and Engagement at Buffalo State University. One day, a woman seeking crucial financial aid information called my office. She was unable to find anyone who could communicate with her in Spanish. Thankfully, we crossed paths and I was able to help her. This incident made it clear that our university's mission statement on diversity is not being fully realized.

Buffalo State University prides itself on its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, yet this incident highlights a significant gap in our services - the lack of translator or interpreter services for non-English speaking students and visitors.

In a city like Buffalo where 11% of residents speak Spanish at home (US Census Bureau), it is essential that our university reflects this linguistic diversity by providing necessary translation services through reputable organizations such as the International Institute Of Buffalo.

Linguistic justice is not just about language; it's about equality, access, and opportunity. By failing to provide these services, we are effectively excluding a portion of our community from accessing vital resources and participating fully in campus life.

We call upon the administration of Buffalo State University to rectify this situation by partnering with the International Institute Of Buffalo or similar organizations to provide translation/interpretation services on campus. Let us truly embody our commitment towards diversity by ensuring everyone can communicate effectively regardless of their native language.

Please sign this petition if you believe in linguistic justice and want all members of our community to have equal access to resources at Buffalo State University.
