Demand Brown University to Expand Substance Free Dorms

Demand Brown University to Expand Substance Free Dorms

The Issue

The Issue

This year, Residential Life has waitlisted many students who applied to be in substance free housing, and the expected result is that most of us will be denied from a substance free environment.

However, substance free, and special interest housing in general, should be an accommodation. Anyone who wish to live in a substance free environment should be able to, and it is Residential Life's responsibility to meet their accommodations. Students who have severe asthma triggered by second hand smoking, students who have debilitated migraines by second hand smoking, students who have traumatic memories associated with substance abuses, international students who have never been exposed to much substances in their lives, and any student who have committed to a substance free lifestyle should be able to live in one.

By capping the number of substance free dorms, Residential Life has made many of their students insecure and distress about their housing next year.

Our Request:

Residential Life should expand the number of substance free dorms in order to accommodate more students who have committed to a substance free life style.
