We, the parents, students, and community members of Zachary, demand immediate accountability and reform within the Zachary Community School District (ZCSD) Child Nutrition Department. Our children deserve high-quality, nourishing meals that fuel their education—not rigid policies that leave them hungry.
Currently, our community is facing critical issues that the district refuses to address:
Lack of Accountability: The district strictly enforces student handbooks and negative balance regulations, yet fails to consistently follow USDA-recommended portion sizes for our kids' meals.
Dismissive Leadership: We lack a Child Nutrition Department that actively listens. Passionate nutrition leaders should be well-versed in policy, review reports transparently, and welcome feedback from students and parents. Instead, our voices are ignored.
Flawed Feedback Systems: The surveys sent out by the district are designed to generate self-serving, positive feedback to protect the district's image, rather than to identify gaps and improve the program.
Punitive Environment: Due to restrictive policies and a systemic lack of care, lunchtime environments at schools like Copper Mill Elementary and Northwestern Middle School feel overly punitive and restrictive rather than nurturing.
Individual complaints are easily dismissed, but a united community cannot be ignored. Policies and procedures only change when we stand together.
Our Demands to the Zachary School Board:
Conduct a transparent, independent audit of lunch menu portion sizes to ensure strict USDA compliance.
Overhaul the current survey system to include open-ended, honest parent and student feedback.
Establish a parent-student advisory committee within the Child Nutrition Department to review menus and policies.
Standardize a compassionate meal policy that ensures no child goes hungry due to account balances.
