Demand Better Medical Oversight and Reject Racial Profiling in Healthcare

Demand Better Medical Oversight and Reject Racial Profiling in Healthcare
The Issue
I, along with countless other parents in our community, have experienced the devastating impact of negligence in the healthcare system. My 13-year-old daughter tragically lost her life due to a grievous misdiagnosis. Initially, what was perceived as a harmless cyst turned out to be a malignant tumor. Our concerns were dismissed by a doctor at San Leandro hospital who chose to not conduct any further tests, and his negligence cost us dearly.
My daughter's story is not unique – countless children and families suffer from overlooked symptoms and inadequate care each day. Unfortunately, discriminatory practices also add to this alarming issue. As we left San Leandro hospital that fateful day, my daughter voiced the heart-wrenching words, "mommy, we were racially profiled." The doctor we trusted didn't even wish to touch her skin.
Neglect and bias cannot have a place in our healthcare system. It must prioritize patient wellbeing irrespective of their racial or ethnic background. Misdiagnosis has serious consequences including unnecessary treatments, avoidable deaths, long-term health issues, and increased healthcare costs. According to studies, diagnostic errors may affect as many as 12 million adults in the U.S. each year. Of this number, one in 20 patients will face severe harm due to these errors (source: BMJ Quality & Safety, 2014).
It's high time we push for change to prevent these avoidable tragedies. We must demand for stringent medical oversight, improved diagnostic procedures, and a robust system to hold healthcare professionals accountable for their mistakes. We must also stress on the necessity of racial sensitivity, equality, and fairness in healthcare interactions.
Please join me in demanding justice for my daughter and for the countless children who have fallen victim to inadequate and unfair medical practices. Your signature can help push for systemic changes to protect future generations from this heartache. We would never know the difference it would have made for Fontiyah had she not been misdiagnosed. Sign our petition today.
