I am one of the many residents living under the jurisdiction of the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority in Buffalo, NY. Over the years, I have witnessed and personally experienced the deterioration of living conditions within our homes, with essential maintenance issues routinely neglected by those meant to ensure our well-being.

My own home, like many others, has suffered from multiple issues—from leaks and mold to malfunctioning heating systems, making it difficult to live in comfort. Despite numerous complaints and requests for repairs, these problems have gone largely unaddressed, and the situation has only worsened over time. This neglect not only undermines our health and safety but also erodes our trust in the agencies meant to safeguard our living conditions.

Unfortunately, I am not alone in this struggle. Thousands of tenants across Buffalo are forced to endure similar, if not worse, living conditions. Buffalo’s harsh winters further exacerbate these problems, leaving families in freezing homes without the proper insulation or heating required to stay warm and safe. It is inexcusable for any tenant to reside in such inadequate conditions when their rent is paid diligently and their rights assure them a habitable home.

Studies show that poor housing conditions are directly linked to adverse health effects, including respiratory diseases and mental health issues. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, suffering more from these substandard conditions. We cannot ignore the long-term impact this has on our community, inhibiting our ability to thrive and be productive citizens.

We are calling on the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority to take immediate and effective action to address these issues. We demand a comprehensive audit of all housing units to be conducted by an independent body, followed by a transparent action plan to rectify identified problems. Tenants deserve timely and quality repairs, open communication about maintenance schedules, and assurance that our homes are safe.
