The Issue

We, the frequent users and lovers of Tullycarnet Park, are saddened by the current state of our cherished community asset. My husband and I walk in this park every day, a routine that has been made less enjoyable due to the worsening conditions.

Tullycarnet Park, has suffered neglect over recent years made worse by the unfortunate loss of our park keeper. The once well-maintained green areas now lay uncared for. Scraggly brambles and weeds have taken over flower beds. The pathways, once safe and welcoming, are now overgrown at the edges, posing a potential risk for trips and falls. The park's structures - the gates and fences - have not been spared either. They stand in dispair, deteriorated, broken, and visibly dented. And the waste bins, often brimming with refuse, are a clear sign of the lack of attention and upkeep. There are often issues with lighting around the parking area.

This downfall of the park not only tarnishes its aesthetics but also impacts the quality of life for us, park goers. Parks contribute to community health, both physically and mentally, by providing spaces for community connection recreation and leisure. As per the Department of Parks and Recreation, well-maintained urban parks are major contributors to community sociability, encouraging residents to participate in exercise, community gatherings, or quiet reflection and improve feelings of well-being and mental health.

Tullycarnet Park is a well-used and cherished community asset that deserves better. We are, therefore, calling on the council to take immediate action on the regeneration of our park, and transform it back into a welcoming communal space for all.
