After experiencing a close scare last year during an incident where a suspicious individual was seen on school grounds, I realized that we are lacking a critical layer of protection in our educational institutions. This petition is personal to me because like every parent, I want to ensure the utmost safety for my child and everyone's child in our community. We cannot wait for a tragedy to occur before taking action.
It is imperative that the Pleasantville school district includes a proposal in the next school budget to hire armed security guards, specifically retired law enforcement officers, for all three of our schools. Studies have shown that having trained security personnel can deter potential threats and provide rapid response capabilities during emergencies. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, schools with security personnel report fewer incidents of violence and vandalism.
Having armed guards on school premises will not only enhance the physical security but also send a clear message to students and staff that their safety is our top priority. These officers, with experience and training in handling various situations, can play a dual role by also assisting in developing safety protocols and monitoring compliance. The cost of implementing this measure could be balanced by reallocating resources from less critical areas or potentially tapping into grants aimed at improving school safety.
