Demand an IURC Investigation Into All Indiana Utilities Using Smart Electric Meters

The Issue

Across northern Indiana, residents are speaking up about a shared concern: electric bills that don’t make sense.

Following the installation of remote-read or “smart” electric meters — technology meant to improve accuracy — many customers report:

  • Sudden and unexplained bill increases
  • Usage readings that don’t match household behavior
  • Higher costs despite no changes in lifestyle or appliances
  • Little transparency or clear explanation when questions are raised
  • The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) is currently investigating NIPSCO for similar concerns. But NIPSCO is not the only utility using this technology.

Companies like American Electric Power (AEP) and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) have installed comparable remote-read meters across northern Indiana — yet they are not receiving the same level of scrutiny.

This Is Bigger Than One Utility
Across social media, Reddit, neighborhood forums, and consumer complaint boards, customers nationwide — including many Hoosiers — describe the same pattern:
confusion, frustration, and a lack of meaningful recourse once smart meters are installed.

When the same concerns appear again and again, across companies and communities, it raises an important question:

Are these systems being independently verified, accurately billed, and properly overseen?

Electricity is not optional. Hoosiers should never be left guessing how their usage is measured or why their bills suddenly change.

What We’re Asking For
We call on the IURC to:

  • Expand its investigation to all Indiana utilities using smart or remote-read meters
  • Require independent testing and verification of meter accuracy
  • Review billing data before and after meter installations
  • Ensure clear, transparent explanations for customers
  • Provide meaningful options when bills are disputed

This request does not assume wrongdoing. It demands fairness, accountability, and consumer protection.

If one utility warrants investigation, all utilities using the same technology should be held to the same standard.
