Demand an Inquiry into the Compromised Homicide Investigation of Lucas Solomon-Polchies

Demand an Inquiry into the Compromised Homicide Investigation of Lucas Solomon-Polchies
The Issue
On February 12, 2026, a New Brunswick Judge confirmed on the official court record that the RCMP investigation into the homicide of Lucas Solomon-Polchies was compromised. Due to a failure to secure the crime scene, vital evidence was lost, leading to depence on one witness directly leading to a significantly reduced sentence for the perpetrator.
The current system of police oversight (CRCC) failed our family by dismissing our complaints prior to these judicial findings. We, the undersigned, demand that the Hon. Robert Gauvin (NB Minister of Public Safety) and Prime Minister Mark Carney intervene to order a full, independent review of the responding RCMP’s conduct in this case. We seek justice not only for Lucas but for all all families who have been denied a fair trial due to systemic police oversight.
This petition is for every New Brunswicker who expects their police force to be professional, thorough, and held to the highest legal standards. When a homicide investigation is 'compromised,' the entire justice system breaks down for everyone.
TO THE HONOURABLE THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF NEW BRUNSWICK ASSEMBLED:
WHEREAS the integrity of the justice system relies on the professional and diligent collection of evidence at crime scenes;
AND WHEREAS in the recent homicide case of Lucas Solomon Polchies, the Court of Law confirmed that the investigation was "compromised" due to specific failures by the RCMP to secure the scene;
AND WHEREAS these investigative failures directly led to a deterioration of the prosecution's case and a sentence that does not reflect the gravity of the loss of life;
AND WHEREAS there is currently no provincial mechanism to trigger an independent audit or inquiry when judicial findings confirm compromisation in a major crime investigation;
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, residents of the Province of New Brunswick, draw the attention of the House to the judicial confirmation of a "compromised" homicide investigation into the death of Lucas Solomon Polchies. We respectfully request that the Legislative Assembly pass Lucas’s Law to amend the New Brunswick Police Act to:
1. MANDATE INDEPENDENT REVIEWS: Require an automatic, independent audit by a third-party oversight body (such as an out-of-province agency) whenever a Court of Law finds that a major crime investigation was "compromised" or "deteriorated" due to police oversight.
2. ESTABLISH BINDING FORENSIC STANDARDS: Create a provincial "Gold Standard" for crime scene preservation that all contracted police forces (RCMP and Municipal) must follow, with legal penalties for failure to meet these standards.
3. ENHANCE VICTIM ACCOUNTABILITY: Grant families the legal right to a "certificate of investigative integrity" upon the conclusion of a case, ensuring that the Department of Public Safety formally signs off on the quality of the work done.
4. PROVINCIAL OVERSIGHT OF CONTRACTS: Ensure that the Director of Policing Standards must publicly report on any "compromised" scenes as part of the annual review of the Provincial Police Service Agreement.
