The Issue

On January 15, 2026, 34-year-old Heber Sanchez Domínguez, a Mexican citizen, died while detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Robert A. Deyton Detention Center in Georgia. He had been in ICE custody for just six days.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Sanchez was found hanging by his neck in his sleeping quarters at approximately 2:05 a.m. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Medical staff reportedly noted no signs of distress during his intake evaluation. Mexican authorities have publicly requested transparency, and the public deserves answers too.

This case is not isolated. In 2025, at least 30 people died in ICE custody, the highest number in two decades. At least four more people have already died in 2026. These deaths raise serious questions about detention conditions, access to medical and mental health care, and ICE's ability to keep people safe.

We are calling on the DHS Office of Inspector General, the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility, and the U.S. Congress to:

  • Launch an immediate, independent investigation into the death of Heber Sanchez Domínguez
  • Release all non-sensitive findings publicly, including timelines, medical reports, and facility practices
  • Investigate whether mental health care, language access, or monitoring protocols were inadequate or ignored

No one should die in U.S. immigration custody without accountability. This is not about politics. It is about human dignity and the basic responsibility of a government to protect those in its care.

Sign this petition if you believe Heber Sanchez Domínguez’s death must be investigated independently, transparently, and urgently. His family deserves the truth. The public deserves oversight.
