Demand an independent audit of PGMOL and VAR protocols
The Issue
For over 22 years, I have supported my beloved club, investing countless hours and emotions into matches that often feel like a rollercoaster. However, being a fan today feels akin to being a fatherless child in the Premier League, where impartiality is as elusive as a trophy.
There is a growing perception among us fans, exacerbated by instances I have sadly observed, that our players are subjected to harsher judgments—a phenomenon often jokingly referred to as the 'United Tax'. Our rivals seemingly glide through matches under lighter scrutiny, benefiting from decisions that can only be described as 'silk-gloved'. These disparities in officiating have unfairly cost us 15 points this season alone. While humorous on social media, these biases translate into real heartbreak for fans as apologies from referees don't restore our stolen points.
To preserve the integrity of this sport that millions around the world hold dear, it's crucial that the rules are consistent and applied fairly. This is why I am calling for an independent audit of the PGMOL and VAR protocols before the 2026/27 Premier League season begins. Such a review will ensure that all clubs, irrespective of their stature or popularity, are subject to the same officiating standards.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and the, often controversial, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system must operate with complete transparency and accountability. An independent audit can reveal inadequacies and biases, whether deliberate or systemic, and help restructure the protocols to prioritize fair play and equanimity across all matches.
Officiating standards in football should be about giving every team, every player, the opportunity to compete on a level playing field. It is time we hold those in power accountable to uphold this standard.
Join me in demanding change. We call on football authorities and the Premier League to commit to this necessary audit so that our beautiful game truly becomes fair for everyone. Sign this petition to ensure the sport is decided on merit, not on arbitrary decisions by those in charge. Stand United against the world for the future of fair football.
