The Issue

I, like many of you, understand the value of resilience and self-reliance. However, an institution I believe that reinforces dependency is the Make A Wish Foundation. Yes, their aim is honorable, offering dreams fulfilled to critically ill children. But, by my observation, this accomplishment comes at a great societal cost.

Instead of fostering strength, it establishes a culture of dependence and misuse of resources. For example, even celebrities, like John Cena, allocate precious time that could be used elsewhere—say, for making more movies—to granting excessive wishes. While their time is their business, we, as a society, perpetuate and encourage this unbalanced use of resources.

Moreover, a certain financial factor must be considered. Most donations to the Make A Wish Foundation are motivated by genuine goodwill. However, it seems more sensible to channel these funds where they can expand greater potential. Education, infrastructure, healthcare, technology—aren't these sectors critically needing investments?

In 2019 alone, the Foundation raised over $315 million (source: Make A Wish Foundation Annual Report, 2019). Imagine if that money was funneled into programs that build our collective future rather than temporary pleasures?

This is by no means a slight on the courage of the children affected by critical illness; their bravery is unparalleled. My call is for us to reconsider as a society where our efforts and money are best directed.

Let's harness resources for sustainable growth and long-term benefits, not short-lived satisfactions. Therefore, I urge everyone to advocate for the discontinuation of the Make A Wish Foundation, not out of animosity, but out of envisioned progress.
