As a resident of Prince Edward Island, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing privatization of our public health care system. Growing up, I always believed in the core values of Canada’s universal health care system – accessibility, fairness, and public funding dedicated to providing everyone with high-quality care. However, recent developments in PEI have begun to erode these foundational principles, jeopardizing the health and welfare of all islanders.

Our public funds, which are meant to bolster the public health care system, are increasingly being diverted towards private ownership, under the guise of efficiency and cost-saving. The paradox here is undeniable: if the public sector, with its focus solely on care, faces financial challenges, how can a profit-driven private system thrive without compromising on patient care? Instead of suggesting we cannot afford our current system, we should be addressing the causes of these financial constraints – inefficiencies and underfunding – within the public model.

Privatization often means that services are stripped back to maximize profits, leaving those most in need at risk of inadequate care. In areas where privatization has been implemented, such as certain U.S. states, disparities in care and accessibility are rampant. For PEI, this is not just a financial issue but a moral one. It’s about protecting the integrity of our community's health system, which ought to be accessible to all, regardless of one's financial situation.

The narrative that privatization is the only path forward is misleading. There are alternative solutions we can implement, such as re-evaluating current spending, investing in preventive care, and increasing accountability for health outcomes in public facilities. By doing so, we can avoid handing over control to for-profit entities whose primary obligations are to shareholders, not patients.

Sadly, this issue has already begun to affect lives on PEI. Reports indicate that wait times have increased as services previously available in the public sector are now subject to private billing and longer processing periods. Families suffer, watching loved ones wait longer for appointments and treatments that were once easily accessible.

Islanders, it is time for us to take a stand and demand that our elected officials listen to the voices of the people they represent. Let's urge them to invest in, not sell off, our public health care system. We need them to reinforce our commitment to public health as a right, not a privilege sold for profit.
