It's sad to see the Secret Service, once widely respected and admired, now disrespected and publicly mocked. The Agency's proud motto, "Worthy of Trust and Confidence", emblazoned on every Secret Service Agent's credentials, apparently no longer holds true today.  

Back in the day, those rare stories that did catch negative public attention were widely considered anomalies and not viewed as a true representation of the Agency as a whole. However,  since the Cartagena Prostitute Scandal, during the Obama administration, these "anomalies" have increased ever more frequently and now regularly capture media headlines. The Secret Service has become a mockery of its former self, with its personnel repeatedly getting caught misusing their authority and operating in a manner unbecoming an elite law enforcement entity it was once widely regarded to be.

Regarding the Agency's latest security failure, it has been reported that Secret Service Spokesperson, Communications Director Anthony Guglielmi, and two others under his command, were implicated in a leak investigation.  They have been stripped  of their security clearances and placed on leave, pending further investigation regarding allegations of abusing their access authority and leaking Classified Information.

Unfortunately, the world is witnessing the continued decline of ethical standards within the Secret Service, that not only tarnishes its reputation but fosters a breeding ground for Insider Threats that jeopardizes our national security.

Recent allegations and investigations have shown a systemic pattern of misconduct, lack of accountability, and poor leadership that can no longer continue to be ignored. These issues not just undermine public trust, they make all of us less safe... as the world witnessed during the assassination attempt on President Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, PA resulting in the tragic death of rally attendee Corey Comperatore, and grave wounding of two other attendees on July 13, 2024.

Critics were quick to blame DEI for the Butler rally failures that day on several young and inexperienced female Agents.  These Agents were captured on video, frantically fumbling about like the Keystone Cops,  instead of projecting the confidence and command presence we expect of seasoned well-trained law enforcement personnel responding competently during an emergency situation.

However, the truth is that these Agents were were not set up for success.  Over the last several years leading up to the Butler, PA rally failure, the following Secret Service practices have set the stage leading to this catastrophic incident at Butler, PA:

1. Lowered hiring standards;
2. Inadequate screening of applicants;
3. Poor training of new hires;
4. Obsolete equipment issued;
5. Non merit-based assignments and promotions;
6. Disparate disciplinary enforcement;
7. Incompetent management;
8. Corrupt leadership.

The aforementioned  issues are no doubt to blame, and they continue to plague the Secret Service, hindering the Agency's mission success capability of "Zero Failure".

Some critics have described the current Secret Service as operating like that of a criminal syndicate, under the “mob boss-like” mentality and leadership attributed to  Director Sean Curran, and his underboss Deputy Director Matthew Quinn (who many claim is the one really running the Agency).  Meanwhile, the working conditions among the overworked and understaffed rank and file continue to decline, and morale is at an all-time low, with no signs of improvement anytime soon. 

Critics point out that the abuses of power and corruption within the agency’s current senior leadership have far surpassed the abuses under any of their predecessors (specifically, Julia Pierson, Kim Cheatle, and Ron Rowe) during the Obama and Biden administrations.  Quinn, who is known for his sarcastic quips, has been quoted boasting to colleagues that  “Rules are open to interpretation for friends, but exist for the enforcement against enemies", as a justification for the Agency's double-standards regarding the rules and application of the Table of Penalties.

Earlier this year, the Secret Service awarded a 20 million dollar contract to multiple third-party vendors for polygraph services, despite the objections of several whistleblowers within the Agency's polygraph program. The whistleblowers argued that the recruitment numbers don't warrant the need for use of outside contractors because there are more than enough in-house Secret Service examiners to handle the workload.  And even with surges in hiring, as senior leadership have been pushing for, there still would  be no need to hire multiple third-party vendors to act as intermediaries to employ outside contractors because the services could be filled with direct-hire contractors as is typically done by most other federal agencies  (i.e. CIA, FBI, State Dept., etc.) at half the cost.  

Yet, at the behest of Deputy Director Quinn, the Secret Service has aggressively moved forward with this initiative ignoring the fact that the government would be wasting an estimated 10+ million dollars using multiple third-party contract polygraph examiners.  Allegations of bid-rigging and kickbacks have been reportedly ignored by Investigators.  And those individuals who objected to this initiative were either targeted and harassed into submission, or laterally reassigned out of the polygraph program.

Given the current dire state of affairs at Secret Service, when this Agency so badly needs adequate funding for necessary radio communications, effective equipment, propper training, and timely payment for personnel overtime hours worked, is now the time to be spending $20 million dollars for contract polygraph services? Is now the time to be reallocating $352 million dollars from the Secret Service budget to fund the White House Ballroom project, that the American taxpayers were repeatedly promised would be privately funded?
