Demand an AI Rulebook for Transparency in Art - Protect Human Artists!
The Issue
I’m Bunny Dreadfullz, a self-taught surreal whimsical artist. I've been drawing since I was five years old. My style doesn’t fit neatly into just one box, and that's a good thing! But I am concerned about AI, and you might be as well!
AI is a threat to us as human artists, and that includes musicians, writers, photographers, illustrators, fine artists, crafters. In other words, all hands-on, human created, traditional art, so I believe we need rules.
Our creations are scraped without consent, and without any monetary compensation, then fed into systems like Midjourney, and spit out as "art." Mashups of cakes, strange animals that appear to be "real", and which of course are fake, along with other bizarre stuff, which are passed off as real. It is, instead a saccharine wonderland, polished to death—no grit, no depth, just a shiny surface. In one word, soulless.
None of the grit, raw, scrappy work like I do, and perhaps that's your style too. No human emotion, passion, heart and definitely, no soul.
These AI generated images are like visual sugar rushes, doling out quick dopamine hits. It's overly polished, candy-coated aesthetic. I've called it out many times on social media saying, "This is AI, it’s not real," and it rattled some cages, while many people were actually grateful for me letting them know that they'd been deceived by fake "art" generated by AI. They finally saw the weird (and not in a good way) deformed hands, six legged horses, and on and on, and could then recognize AI generated images, whereas before, they could not. Part of this too, is on us to educate the public as to when something is AI generated.
AI is gutting our craft and the human touch! We need to enforce transparency, label AI content, stop fakes. Act now! Without rules, our voices get drowned out, our styles stolen, and creativity’s fairness trashed. Big Tech built these tools—now they need to protect us and our art.
I believe we need an AI rulebook to protect our work and ensure transparency. Here is what I've come up with so far:
Mandatory Consent for Scraping: AI companies need permission to use our work.
Transparency in Data Use: They’ve got to show what they’re scraping.
Label AI-Generated Content: Tag it “AI-generated” or “Made with [tool].”
Link Back to Original Artists: Credit and link if it’s inspired by human artists.
Protect Artistic Styles: No mimicking our unique vibes without consent. In other words, AI can’t mimic an artist’s distinct style (like Ryden’s plushy aesthetic, Garcia’s gothic whimsy, or your varied surreal styles) without permission.
AI Rules really could be a game-changer for artists! Setting clear boundaries, like making AI link back to the original creators or showing a “creative lineage,” could help the way we feel. It’s all about giving credit where credit’s due and keeping the human element alive. I think many of us would feel less tension about AI if we had solid rules protecting US and OUR ART.
Here are a few more:
Penalties for Misrepresentation: Consequences for faking it as “real” or human-made.
Public Education on AI Content: Platforms teach folks what AI art is.
Ban on Misrepresenting AI as ‘Real’ Products: No passing off AI designs as tangible stuff without saying so.
No matter your style, together, we can keep creativity fair and honest!
Please sign to demand transparency and keep human art alive!
