Demand Amazon to Remove Unverified Biography Exploiting Kim Porter's Death #KimPorterBook
The Issue
I made a decision as a consumer that I now deeply regret. I purchased a book titled "KIM’S LOST WORDS: A journey for justice, from the other side…" This book, supposed to be a memoir, was purportedly penned by the late actress and model Kim Porter, but there are serious doubts about its authenticity. The book was published by author Jamal Millwood, whose real name is Todd Guzze, and it has garnered substantial controversy and disapproval.
Guzze has publicly stated that he is not certain about the book's authenticity. This admission of ignorance, coupled with an overwhelmingly negative response from Porter's family, casts a cloud of suspicion over the entire enterprise. Her ex-partner and children have adamantly rebuked the book, publicly declaring its contents as false. This disregard for moral and ethical considerations in publishing is deeply distressing.
Despite the barrage of criticism and controversy, the book has generated significant revenue. Reports claim that it has earned the author over a million in sales. This situation presents a gross exploitation of a beloved figure's death for personal gain. Guzze's track record suggests a history of profiteering off sensational stories and chasing clout, furthering this concern. These actions are a blatant display of indifference and should not be condoned or given a platform.
Consequently, the presence of such insincere material on a platform as influential as Amazon is unsettling. It's unsettling for Kim Porter's loved ones, it's unsettling for readers who were misled under false pretenses, and it's unsettling for the integrity of publishing standards. By continuing to sell this book, Amazon is involuntarily endorsing a practice that tarnishes its brand value.
It is deeply wrong for a white man like Todd Guzze, who goes by the name Jamal Millwood, to exploit the tragic death of a Black woman like Kim Porter for profit. While I acknowledge that Porter may have endured abuse during her relationship with Sean "Diddy" Combs, this book, "KIM'S LOST WORDS: A journey for justice, from the other side," feels disconnected from what would be expected of Kim's diary/memoir. A diary would be way more elaborate, detailed and personal. There's a disconnect in this book, and it's obvious that it's not Kim speaking. Guzze admits he isn’t even sure if the story is true, relying on so-called anonymous sources who supposedly provided him with a hard drive of Kim’s story. The book reads more like fiction than a memoir, a sensationalized novella aimed at capitalizing on grief and intrigue.
By Guzze's own admission, he cannot verify his sources, and the fact that he's chosen to proceed with publishing despite these uncertainties speaks to a lack of integrity. He is profiting from the memory of a Black woman who can no longer defend herself, and he is doing so in a way that disrespects both her legacy and her family, who have publicly denounced the book as false. Exploiting Kim Porter's life for personal gain is an act of indifference, not just toward her loved ones, but also toward the Black community, which often sees its members commodified in death.
For these reasons, we respectfully call on Amazon to remove 'KIM’S LOST WORDS: A journey for justice from the other side' from its inventory. By doing so, Amazon will send out a strong message against those who seek to exploit the deceased's fame for their self-interests. We believe that such unified action towards preservation of authenticity and moral responsibility is crucial.
Please, stand with us. Demand truth. Demand respect for Kim Porter's memory. Sign the petition.
