Demand air conditioning in Greece Central schools

The Issue

My daughter suffers from a condition that causes her to pass out in extreme heat. This often leaves her with no choice but to miss school on unbearably hot days. She's just one of many children who endure sweltering conditions in an environment where they should be at ease and focused on learning.

The Greece Central School District needs to prioritize the well-being and educational success of its students by providing air conditioning in all classrooms. While it's commendable to have new football fields, it's hard to justify these expenses when basic comforts like a temperate classroom environment are absent.

During the summer months, temperatures can soar, turning classrooms into oppressive environments that hinder learning and can jeopardize students' health. According to local climate data, Greece, NY, experiences average summer highs that can easily exceed 85°F. These conditions are intolerable, especially for children who, like my daughter, suffer from heat-related health issues.

Numerous studies have shown that excessive heat not only affects comfort but significantly impacts cognitive performance, concentration, and overall academic success. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that every added school day with temperatures above 90°F decreases student learning by 1% of a year's worth of learning.

Installing air conditioning is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. It’s an investment in our children’s future, academic success, and overall health. Students deserve a learning environment where they can thrive, not just survive the heat.

Please join me in urging the Greece Central School District to take immediate action. Let's ensure that all students have a comfortable and conducive environment for learning. Sign this petition to make air-conditioned classrooms a reality for our children now!
