The Issue

It’s an uneasy feeling when the safety of our community is constantly threatened by the increasing crime rate, including rampant shootings, assaults, and multiple murders, right in our own neighborhood, most of which takes place at the Life at Jackson Square/Nob Hill apartments. As a native Houstonian, I have watched as these issues have increased over time, turning our once peaceful community into a place of anxiety and danger.

Families should not have to live in fear. This includes not just the long-time residents and new young families living nearby, but also the children and families residing within these apartment complexes. It is unacceptable that local officials have not taken tangible steps to address this crisis. Suing the apartment owners has proven to be insufficient. Communications to city officials about these concerns have gone unanswered, leaving the community feeling neglected and vulnerable.

To ensure the safety of everyone in the Meyerland/Maplewood area, we demand the city of Houston to take immediate action. Specifically, the apartment owners should be required to:

  • 24/7 Houston Police Department (HPD) officers on duty at these locations to promptly address criminal activities
  • Conduct a security risk assessment: Understand the complex's specific vulnerabilities to identify areas needing improvement.
  • Upgrade lighting: Install or improve lighting in common areas, entrances, and parking lots to deter crime.
  • Install surveillance systems: Place security cameras in common areas to deter crime and provide evidence.
  • Implement access control: Use key cards or other access control systems to secure entrances and limit unauthorized access.
  • Secure common areas: Regularly inspect and repair security features like gates, locks, and doors in common areas.
  • Ensure proper maintenance: Address maintenance issues promptly, as neglected buildings can signal a lack of security.

This is a matter of public safety, not just for those directly affected but for the entire community. We cannot remain complacent as crime continues to rise. It is imperative that we hold our local government accountable and push for solutions that prioritize the well-being and safety of all residents.

I urge all residents of Meyerland, Maplewood, and concerned citizens of Houston to support this petition. By signing, you are sending a clear message to our city leaders that the safety and security of our neighborhood cannot be compromised. Together, we can bring about the change needed to restore peace and safety to our community. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard!
