The Issue

In August 2025, an unimaginable tragedy struck Wichita, Kansas, when LaShea Bell, aged 42, and A’Niah Bell, aged 25, were killed in a devastating DUI crash. Their lives were abruptly taken by Clowie Ann McLaughlin, now charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence. Amidst the midst of this family's grief and the community's shock, the wheels of justice have hit an unnecessary bump — a pause in the proceedings for a mental competency evaluation of the accused driver.

We fully acknowledge and respect the importance of due process — it is a pillar of our justice system. However, we also believe that justice delayed is justice denied. This is not just about one case; it’s about two lives senselessly lost, a family irrevocably shattered, and a community yearning for closure and accountability. Every day of delay prolongs the suffering of those left behind and undermines public trust in our justice system.

The evidence in such DUI cases needs to be addressed with urgency and transparency, ensuring the grieving families receive the justice they deserve. The case's current delay, caused by the mental competency evaluation, is understandably a legal necessity but it should be conducted swiftly to avoid prolonged trauma for the affected families.

We urge the Wichita District Court to prioritize this case, ensuring that the mental competency evaluation is expedited, and proceedings are resumed without further undue delays. The families of LaShea and A’Niah Bell deserve clarity and resolution. The community deserves to see justice served.

Let us stand together as a voice for accountability and justice. We call upon the authorities to take action now and move this case forward promptly. Please sign this petition to demand that justice be served without further delay in the case of LaShea and A’Niah Bell.
