The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Nelson Mandela Bay and concerned citizens across South Africa, urgently call for justice in the unresolved hit-and-run killing of Tristan Jacobs. It has now been over a month since Tristan’s life was tragically taken, yet no meaningful progress has been made in the investigation.

What Happened

- Tristan Jacobs was killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a VW Polo.

- The driver fled the scene and only surrendered after widespread public pressure.

- Despite admitting involvement, the suspect has not been charged.

- Tristan’s mother has been repeatedly dismissed and disrespected by the investigating officer at Gelvandale Police Station.

Our Concerns

- The investigating officer claims he is “awaiting statements” but has made no effort to obtain them.

- He has told Tristan’s mother she is “a nuisance” and threatened to “put the file at the bottom” because “Hy hou nie van lastige mense nie.”

- The officer has admitted knowing the suspect personally and stated that the suspect “grew up in front of him.”

- The suspect’s father is reportedly a police officer raising serious concerns about conflict of interest and obstruction of justice.

Legal Grounds

We believe this case reflects violations of:

- Section 9 of the Constitution: Equal protection under the law.

- Section 195 of the Constitution: Public servants must act with transparency, accountability, and impartiality.

- Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977: Duty to investigate crimes thoroughly and without bias.

- National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, Section 61: Fleeing the scene of an accident involving injury or death is a criminal offense.

What We Demand

1. Immediate reassignment of the case to an impartial investigator.

2. Formal disciplinary review of the current investigating officer’s conduct.

3. Transparent updates on the status of the investigation and case file.

4. Assurance that no individual receives preferential treatment due to personal or professional ties.

5. Justice for Tristan Jacobs and accountability for all involved.

Why It Matters

This is not just about one family’s pain, it is about the integrity of our justice system and the safety of every citizen. We stand with Tristan’s family and demand that the law be applied without fear or favour.

We will not be silent. We will not be ignored. Tristan Jacobs deserves justice.
