The Issue

The power of the vote is one of the most sacred rights for the minority and poor people of our country. Having this right unilaterally manipulated is tantamount to the poll taxes that minorities and poor people were subjected to in the 1900s. Today, a similar injustice seems to be unfolding in Peru, Indiana, where the Elections Board has failed to accurately list residents for the previous 2024 elections, and the upcoming May 5, 2026, primary, and November 3, 2026, general, elections.

The residents of the Wabash River Commons, on Canal Street in Peru, neighbored and bordered on every side by residences and businesses listed as city dwellings (Peru/Precinct 02), are listed as County residents (Pipe Creek/Precinct 03), and were denied the right to vote accurately in the 2024 election.  Though protested and questioned as recently as the first week of July of 2025, this error has not been corrected as evidenced by the Secretary of State listing identifying residents as still county residents.  It appears these residents have been failed by their elected officials.

This failure not only jeopardizes the integrity of the electoral process but also disproportionately affects minority and low-income communities who already face numerous hurdles in exercising their right to vote. The integrity of the voting process is fundamental to democracy, and any lapse in accurately including all eligible residents risks disenfranchising those who are already marginalized.

Concrete evidence from numerous community reports suggests discrepancies in voter registration lists and apparent neglect in addressing these issues when raised. The alleged disparate treatment of voters from minority and poor backgrounds raises concerns about maintaining a fair and equitable election process.

We are calling for federal oversight to investigate these discrepancies thoroughly and ensure that necessary corrections are made promptly. It's crucial that all voices, particularly those of marginalized groups, are heard and counted in this election.

This is not just a call for action—it's a plea for justice and equal representation. Ensuring that every eligible person is registered and able to vote is not only a matter of policy but a moral imperative.

Sign this petition to demand accountability from Peru, IN Election Board and the State of Indiana to ensure a fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process in 2026.
