Demand Accountability from John Hunter Hospital
The issue
John Hunter Hospital took my vision, my optic nerve is fried. I hope you and your family never have to go through this horrific ordeal. It will break your heart and soul.it didn't matter and never will, taking accountability seems to be more legal than ethical. How effed is that when we are dying and losing body parts.
I was in desperate need of empathy and urgent surgical intervention, stated in writing three times from optometrists and ophthalmologists. Still, I was met with a dismissive attitude and an endless cycle of deferrals. Apart from the drs bringing student drs in to look at the freak show, no interest was taken in actually fixing my pain, my eye, or anything else. I presented more than a dozen times, after being rushed by ambulance 16th December 2024, from Cessnock hospital to John Hunter hospital, eye pressure of nearly 70, they left my interocular pressure for weeks. Six weeks to be exact. My son spent his 8th birthday in hospital with me. We would have spent Christmas in hospital but instead I stayed huddled crying in agony waiting for it to be over while my son tried to have a nice day with his friend.
Not once was my eye a priority. The specialists refused to help. The hospital consistently created an unwelcoming uncaring environment.
In over a dozen visits they chose to disregard my pain. I lost twelve kilos in six weeks. I could not eat drink or hold food in my mouth.
All involved refused to take responsibility, leaving me in agony, and telling me eye pressure doesn't hurt, while my health continued to deteriorate. My body is a testament to the lack of urgency to assist people in need. knees and hips that need replacement, pinched nerves in my neck, spine bulges, and the weight of complex trauma. I have been diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and yet, instead of receiving holistic care, or any care, that worked. I've encountered a system that seems indifferent to healing those in need, especially if they have made judgement. It really doesn't matter how much I begged for help.
im not saying the hospital doesn't do good work for some. But it's Not good enough when people are falling through the cracks and being turned away, especially when they need urgent actual help.
what good is it, if the hospital can't listen to an adult how will they listen to a child. They create barriers through their own entitlement and enforce stigma, ppl don't go to hospital for fun. It's not just a job. It's OUR lives. Yet while we are ignored we get to hear about their weekend.
Why is it that at 44, I was made to feel responsible for having a rare form of glaucoma? Why is a 17-year-old with diabetes and a glucose level over forty left without the proper support and care? This isn't just my story—this neglect affects countless others in our community who rely on John Hunter Hospital and its specialists for life-saving treatment. My profession is art therapist, needless to say I have no business, no life and I am no one.
Specialists that make personal assumptions, Refuse to treat people that need care.
I am appalled and saddened.
John Hunter Hospital is a place meant to heal, but it has consistently failed to provide the kindness and constructive validation that patients desperately need. It should be a sanctuary of care, but how often is it leaving patients feeling blamed, disregarded, and abandoned?
when I raised this issue through the complaints department. Nothing.
We demand immediate reform and accountability from John Hunter Hospital. We call for the establishment of transparent processes that ensure all patients receive the empathy and necessary medical interventions required for their conditions. We appeal for an overhaul in patient care approaches to create a truly holistic environment that these times and our community deserve.
I ended up at Sydney eye hospital where I was kept for a week and given two urgent eye operations in two days.
it's not rocket science, every single person should have the right to be heard, or provided a social worker at emergency department. Not nurses that look u up and down and make personal judgment.
every persons life matters yet not to a hospital that not only ummed and arghed but called me names rolled their eyes and took blood without consent just to see if I was a junkie. How is that fair treatment.
I don't have an eye because of John Hunter. They didn't mind saying loudly just get her out of here.
