Demand Accountability from DORA: Protect Victims of Medical Corruption and Misconduct

The Issue

Dear Members of DORA and Colorado State Legislators,

We, the undersigned, demand immediate action to address and rectify the egregious failures of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) in handling cases of medical corruption and malpractice. The following details highlight the urgent need for reform:

Background:

Through the years, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) has consistently failed to protect the public from medical professionals who abuse their positions and violate ethical standards. This pattern of inaction has resulted in numerous cases of harassment, abuse, and medical negligence going unpunished, thereby endangering the public and misusing resources meant for patient protection.

Example Cases of Concern:

  • Dr. S. Matthews: A Denver heart doctor facing charges for sexually abusing patients, yet DORA renewed his license.
  • Dr. M. Long: A marijuana and rehab doctor faced numerous complaints and affidavits regarding abuse of medical records, drugs, and financial wrongdoing, without DORA taking appropriate action.
  • Dr. G. Kim: A plastic surgeon convicted of attempted manslaughter after refusing to call 911 for a patient who eventually died yet retained his license without issue even as he was on trial.

Systemic Failures of DORA:

  • Neglecting Reports of Harassment and Abuse:
    • Ignored clear evidence of misconduct and harassment by licensed practitioners.
  • Overlooking Medical Errors and Malpractice:
    • Failed to address cases where medical errors caused significant harm to patients.
    • Allowed practitioners involved in mutilating surgeries and unnecessary procedures to continue practicing.
  • Ignoring Substance Abuse Among Health Professionals:
    • Failed to act on reports of drug and alcohol abuse among healthcare providers.
  • Neglecting Controlled Substance Abuse by Doctors:
    • Ignored irresponsible prescription practices of controlled substances.
  • Overlooking Physician Incompetence:
    • Ignored numerous cases of physician incompetence that posed risks to patient safety.
  • Failing to Address Abandonment of Licenses:
    • Allowed physicians and nurses to relocate to other states to evade disciplinary action.
  • Neglecting Resident Duty Hour Violations:
    • Ignored the abuse of resident duty hour limitations, risking patient care quality.
  • Assigning Untrained Residents to Critical Care:
    • Permitted inexperienced residents to care for critically ill patients without adequate supervision.
