Demand Accountability from CenterPoint for Prolonged Power Outages
The Issue
I am a resident deeply affected by the prolonged power outages in Houston, TX, following a Category 1 hurricane. The heat is unbearable, happening day by day, while I'm running out of food for my children. I'm not alone in this struggle. We've seen our neighbors and fellow Houstonians experience the same issues - depletion of food supplies and overcrowded shelters. For up to 9 agonizing days, millions of us have been without power, helpless in this escalating crisis.
CenterPoint is the entity responsible for our energy services and they appear to be moving at a snail's pace to resolve the crisis. As we understand it, they are even reluctant to pay outside help to speed up restoration efforts.
Our city's response to a Category 1 hurricane has been woeful. One can only imagine the repercussions if we had been hit by a Category 4. We need systems in place to protect us from severe weather, not to let us down at our most vulnerable times.
It's time for CenterPoint to share responsibility for the impact of these power outages on their customers. We demand an investigation into their conduct and policies, and a commitment to better preparedness for future severe weather events.
