The Issue

I’m heartbroken to share that the Wildwood Trust has tragically shot their entire pack of five European grey wolves right in plain view of the others after a severe breakdown within their enclosure. This pack included Nuna and Odin, the adult pair, along with their three male offspring, Minimus, Tiberius, and Maximus. According to a press release from the park, the situation had been deteriorating over recent weeks, leading to severe infighting among the wolves.  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1FbZaDP4bY/

However, this decision to shoot all of them raises serious ethical concerns. Some of these wolves were uninjured or had injuries that could have been treated. By choosing to end their lives prematurely, the park has engaged in what can only be described as 'Zoothanasia', not euthanasia.  Shooting, especially in front of other animals, is just violent and unnecessary.

This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for better animal welfare practices. Wildwood Trust, and other similar institutions, should prioritize the welfare of their animals by implementing non-lethal management strategies. This includes conducting thorough assessments of pack dynamics, promptly addressing signs of distress, and considering alternatives like sterilization or transferring animals to legitimate sanctuaries where they can thrive.

The unnecessary loss of these beautiful creatures should serve as a wake-up call. We must demand accountability and change to ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.

Join me in calling on the Wildwood Trust to adopt more humane practices and prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. The lives of innocent animals are at stake.

Please sign this petition to demand justice for the wolves and to ensure better protection for all animals in captivity.
