The Issue

Tacoma, Washington - The grief must be unbearable. That's what one Washington state family is feeling tonight after their beloved 10-year-old poodle, Brownie, was killed during the Tacoma City Marathon. The tragic incident occurred when a dog, Dallas, who was brought to the event by The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County to promote adoption, became anxious and attacked Brownie, resulting in his death.

Brownie's family, including his dog dad, Paul Baek, was left devastated. Paul had just finished his half-marathon and joined his wife and Brownie when the horrific event took place. The chaos and noise of such a bustling event proved overwhelming for Dallas, leading to an outcome no one anticipated.

The shelter, in response, deemed Dallas dangerous and euthanized him. This development adds a heartbreaking layer to an already painful story. Both Brownie and Dallas were failed by a system that didn't prioritize their safety or wellbeing. They should have never been subjected to the high-stress environment of a marathon.

We demand accountability and immediate action to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County must review their protocols for bringing animals to public events and ensure all future adoptions are handled with the utmost attention to the animal's comfort and security.

This isn't just about Brownie and Dallas. It's about the safety of all animals in our community. We call for the implementation of new safety measures and training for all shelter staff and volunteers involved in animal care and public events.

Sign this petition to hold those responsible accountable and honor the memory of two beloved dogs, ensuring no other family has to endure such heartbreak. Let’s make sure our community is a safe place for all our furry friends.
