Sarthak Mattoo was more than a statistic; he was a vibrant individual, dearly loved and an integral part of his community. He was also a Kashmiri, a fact that made this case personal for many. Despite the seriousness of the incident involving him, the responses from those responsible for protecting the public trust appear to be sorely lacking.
The incident involving Sarthak occurred in the busy and upscale locality of Vasant Kunj, where modern surveillance measures, such as CCTV cameras, are supposed to ensure public safety and swift justice. Yet, there seems to be a glaring disparity in how the investigation was conducted. Had the roles been reversed—with the accused in place of Sarthak—can we be sure that the response would have been similarly delayed? The presence of CCTV coverage in Vasant Kunj should have been instrumental in rapidly identifying and apprehending those responsible.
Moreover, the protocol surrounding the alcohol tests raises critical concerns. Why was there a delay of three days in conducting such a crucial determinant test, potentially affecting its results? This delay not only obscures the facts but questions the integrity of the investigation process itself.
Sarthak Mattoo deserves justice, and justice delayed is often justice denied. We urge the Government of India to implement the following immediate actions:
1. A thorough and immediate review of all CCTV footage in the area to identify and apprehend those responsible for Sarthak's demise.
2. An investigation into the procedural delays in conducting the alcohol tests to ensure accountability among those who allowed the delay.
3. A public statement from law enforcement and government officials addressing these concerns and outlining the steps being taken to prevent such disparities in future cases.
