The Issue
I am a parent of two incredibly smart autistic children, and like many in our community, I am deeply concerned about their educational future as they transition from elementary to middle school. Currently, Springfield Elementary provides two specialized autistic support classrooms, ensuring our children receive the care and attention they need. However, as they advance to Northwestern Middle School and High School, I fear that this vital support will disappear, leaving them to navigate a more challenging environment with insufficient guidance.
Many families with children in middle school have shared similar worries. They have experienced firsthand the lack of support, witnessing their children being placed in life skills programs without the necessary paraprofessionals to aid them from class to class. This is upsetting and unacceptable, especially as our children grow and their educational needs become more complex.
Research indicates that students with autism often experience heightened anxiety and stress during transitions between educational stages. According to the National Autism Society, consistent support throughout schooling significantly enhances their academic performance and emotional well-being.
We are advocating for the establishment of a specialized autistic support classroom at Northwestern Middle and High School. This will provide continuity and ensure that autistic students receive the necessary assistance to succeed academically and socially. Our children deserve the right to a supportive, inclusive, and empowering educational environment.
Join us in urging the Northwestern school district to uphold the commitment to educational diversity and inclusion by providing specialized classrooms and support staff for our autistic children. Let us make sure no child's needs are neglected as they move forward in their education. Please sign this petition to voice your support for this crucial initiative.
