Demand a Say in Maurice A. Ferré Park's Future

The Issue

Last October, the Bayfront Park Management Trust (BPMT) began constructing an outdoor gym in Maurice A Ferre Park without soliciting any feedback from the public. This gym contradicts the park’s master plan, which was commissioned at great expense and approved by our city council to be the legally guiding document for development in MAF Park.

Remarkably, this is the fifth such project constructed in MAF Park in two years without community input, diminishing our green space and raising legal and ethical concerns. Equally concerning, the BPMT has plans to build LED billboards (with one already under construction), soccer fields, pickleball courts, and a water park feature, and additional, unneeded bathrooms.

At the onset of the gym’s construction, the 900 Biscayne Bay Condo Association filed an appeal, at which time construction of the gym should have stopped in accordance with the hold-harmless warrant issued as part of Miami's permitting process. Despite the appeal, construction continued.

The Miami Planning Zoning and Appeals board voted overwhelmingly in support of our appeal so this matter is now being considered by the City Commission. Our commissioners want to hear from residents downtown.

We urge you to sign this petition if you support:

  • Relocating the gym to another park, restoring this area to its original green space
  • Banning billboards of any kind in our parks

  • Requiring the BPMT to follow city code and engage with the public prior to initiating any future projects in our parks
