The Issue
I am personally intertwined in this battle for justice - Areli Escobar is my father. Since day one, he has steadfastly maintained his innocence, even in the face of a death row sentencing. What's truly chilling about this case, regardless of your stance on the death penalty, is its unnerving extent of unreliability. What put my father on death row was nothing short of questionable DNA evidence used to convict him.
The prosecutors in his case themselves harbour doubts about the fairness of the trial. The Travis County District Court flagged that “The State’s use of unreliable, false, or misleading DNA evidence" is what secured the conviction of Areli Escobar. This unnerving fact alone establishes the immediate need for a thorough reevaluation of his case and the evidence against him.
According to The Innocence Project, 362 people in the U.S. have been exonerated through DNA testing, and false or misleading forensic evidence contributed to about 45% of wrongful convictions in DNA exoneree cases (as per their reports from 2020). These figures underline the potential fallibility of DNA based convictions and highlight the urgency for this petition.
It's time to spotlight the flaws in our justice system, particularly in capital punishment cases. According to the Innocence Project, there have been 375 post-conviction DNA exonerations in the United States, demonstrating the fallibility in our justice system when it comes to DNA evidence.
By signing this petition, call for a reevaluation of the DNA evidence used against Areli Escobar and his case. Stand for justice, for the right to a fair trial, and for the possibility that error has placed an innocent man on death row. Sign to show your support.
