The Issue

As a concerned citizen deeply affected by the recent memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the Churchill Falls agreement, I am calling for a public referendum. The energy and resources harnessed from Churchill Falls are not just a critical asset for us in Newfoundland and Labrador; they are a part of our identity and future prosperity. It is essential that any significant changes or agreements made concerning this historical facility and its benefits reflect the will of the people.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has entered into a new MOU which outlines terms that will hugely impact our region's economic and energy landscape. This agreement is being led by Tony Wakeham, among others, and while their intentions may be in the interest of progress, it is critical that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have a direct say in such a monumental decision. The repercussions of this MOU extend far beyond bureaucratic lines and deeply into our homes, businesses, and children’s futures.

Historically, agreements like these have long-term consequences on energy pricing, availability, and regional autonomy. We have seen how previous deals have influenced our economy and dictated the infrastructural investments for decades. Of particular concern is the potential for increased energy costs or diverted profits that could otherwise benefit our community directly. We need transparency and the opportunity to print our voice on the final terms of any agreement concerning the Churchill Falls agreements.

A public referendum provides the most democratic means of ensuring that our voices are heard and respected. It will allow all eligible voters to engage with the information, articulate their perspectives, and make an informed decision about what is best for our province.

We must urge Tony Wakeham and all stakeholders involved to prioritize the will of the people and set a date for a public referendum on the Churchill Falls MOU. Our future and that of our environment should not lie solely in the hands of a few but be shaped by the collective choice of the many who live and thrive here.

Join me in signing this petition to demand a referendum and safeguard our province's interests. Let's ensure that every citizen of Newfoundland and Labrador has a voice in this critical decision. Your signature is a call for democracy, transparency, and respect for the values we hold dear. Please sign and share this petition widely.
