I'm of retirement age now, having spent a lifetime witnessing politics fluctuate and shape our society in diverse ways. What I am seeing now, however, deeply troubles me. It's as though those we elect to represent us are, in turn, eradicating the future we've all worked so hard to build. This mounting disillusionment with the political landscape is deeply personal and worrisome.

The present government has been immersed in numerous allegations of misconduct, tarring the integrity of our democracy. A damning blow to the concept of representative governance itself. To yield a more fair, accountable and transparent tenure, it is crucial we undertake remedial actions.

General elections are indeed the cornerstone of a robust democratic system. They provide an opportunity to affirm or challenge the governance in place, based on its performance and credibility. For this, it is only just and appropriate to demand a general election in light of the current allegations against the government.

Evidence-based decision making is a key principle of good governance. However, these allegations, if proven, undermine this principle and our trust in government. It is essential that the voice of the public is heard, and any alleged wrongdoing is appropriately investigated, holding our elected representatives accountable.

As concerned citizens, vested in the future of our country, it is our collective responsibility to uphold democratic values.
