better treatment of pets in cabin of aircraft
The Issue
In a perfect world, a well behaved pet, under the control of their owner, could fly on their owners' laps. On some flights we have our pet crate/carrier on our laps, with both zippered openings wide open and she sits and stares out at the world. She is always under control (by us) but it really is her nature to sit with us and want to be with us. On a few of those flights, a strict flight attendant has insisted she be fully zipped up AND fully under the seat. To me that is just mean spirited.
We should be allowed to have an airline provide us with pet travel documents such that they know if you have flown more than once with that airline with the same pet and the same pet carrier. Delta in particular harasses me on a regular basis about the same pet on the same flight as if something major has changed. If they had records of me and the pet, wouldn't it be so much easier?
This could lead to tracking pet behavior. Which could lead to some unfair treatment. Would you ban a parent from flying (again) if their child had an accident and stunk up the whole plane? I would hope not.
BUT having the option to register my pet with an airline could lead to pets being "certified" to fly on board at different levels, maybe even lead to all on-board pets being treated the same as companion dogs if they pass some airline approved behavior test.
MAYBE, dare I say it? Maybe it could lead to a mileage program for frequent pet fliers would be great! We have flown about 4 flights/yr since 2011, more and more often with Southwest (because of standard seat sizes) and less and less with Delta (because they are just mean on board as well as having weird seat sizes and configurations).
I have flown for $98 RT to Florida while my pet paid $190 for the same flight, only to be stuck under a seat. It just seems wrong and unfair to me. I bet if I had paid for an extra seat, the airline would not have allowed our pet carrier to be seat belted in that seat AND most likely they would have insisted on STILL being paid the $190 for the pet to travel round trip!!!
Fictitious phone conversation (or web form question):
Operator: "Will Fido be traveling with you on this trip?"
Me: "Yes! He will!"
& etc.
Fantastic result for this petition!
