Deliver a second pharmacy in Corsham

Deliver a second pharmacy in Corsham
The Issue
Pharmacy provision in Corsham and the surrounding villages has suffered since the closure of Boots in the town centre. With the demographics of Corsham and the surrounds, it is vital that we have an additional pharmacy.
Following the decision of Pharmacy Appeals Committee appointed by NHS Resolution rejecting the decision by BSW ICB to refuse an application for a second pharmacy in Corsham we are calling on the ICB to grant the application and allow the people of Corsham and the surrounding areas greater access to pharmacy services.
In 2021 the Corsham community area had a population of 21,576 with 9111 households. Of that population, 4,111 were under 15 and 4,895 were 65 and older. The population has only grown and the percentage of over 65s increased.
This is significant because two in five adults aged 65 and over had a longstanding illness and one in five had a non-limiting life standing illness in 2021. This means a large proportion of the population in our area will need regular medication and check ups.
With only one pharmacy this means that any shortages or issues with supply of medications and long queues due to high demand puts people at risk of missing medication, delays in dispensing and long waits which are particularly difficult for those who have problems standing.
Moreover, the prevalence of limiting conditions increases with age, rising from 31% in the 65-69 age group to 57% in those aged 80 and over. Multi-morbidity, having two or more conditions, is also prevalent, with 54% of people over 65 having two or more conditions in 2015, a figure predicted to rise to 67.8% by 2035
In Corsham, Wiltshire, 34% of 10-11 year olds are obese or overweight, which is higher than the Wiltshire average of 28%.
Pharmacies now have the ability to prescribe and treat for seven common ailments, helping to reduce the burden off GP practices. But without capacity at the pharmacy, this will not happen. This is why we call on the ICB to follow the wishes of us, the local people as well as the NHS appeals committee and grant the application.
