PLASTIC ! It stays in the environment for at least 1000 years or more and doesn't ever fully degrade and yet its everywhere, in the supermarket,  grocery stores where we buy our basic food, utility items etc. Its a major packaging material when we order our food or products online or from any outlets.

A whooping 91 % of plastic is not recycled and is thrown in the garbage making its way to the landfill sites which are already running out of their capacity. This plastic waste makes its easy way into our food chain, adding toxins to our water bodies. The list of damages is endless. What are we leaving for our childrens? Polluted water! Polluted air to breathe!

Burning it is not a solution either since that accounts for toxins entering into air adding to air pollution with which Delhi is already struggling. Numerous attempts has been made to stop plastic usage in the Capital however till now the situation is worse and this dreaded material is everywhere while States like Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh are taking conscious efforts in this direction to ban plastic and save the environment. Why is Delhi still lagging behind? Are we less concerned to this obvious threat! Are we less equipped in any which way to make this happen? NO! That is the reason i raised this petition to make people aware and act since i know you care!

Even if residents try to stop the plastic usage or recycle it, they cannot do it without support from outlets, supermarkets and online giants who conveniently packs everything in plastic.

Its high time that we all awaken to the reality and request Delhi Government to get some strict rules in place and do everything in their capacity to:

1) STOP single use plastic packaging in Delhi and encourage biodegradable materials like jute, cloth bags, paper bags, butter paper, bamboo etc. and force companies, businesses avoid unnecessary plastic packaging in everything.

2) Make RECYCLING easy for residents where they can provide the plastic bottles, wraps etc to the nearby recycling centers (create small hubs for collection) which can be then recycled instead of being thrown in the bins.

3) Make the people aware what to do with non recyclable material like chips, biscuits packets etc which cannot be recycled. Also discourage companies to use this material.

We can pick best practices across the states as well as around the world and be an example! The cost of plastic waste is huge for everyone and we all need to do our bit to fight this!

We must remember Plastic thrown away doesn't go anywhere, it just do more damage to us in many different ways!!
