The Issue

The proposed development of a 100% affordable low-income apartment complex at 1637–1651 Stanford Street in Santa Monica has sparked significant concern among the local community. Residents of the surrounding neighborhood respectfully request that the City of Santa Monica Planning Commission and the Community Corporation of Santa Monica (CCSM) pause and re-evaluate this project to ensure it aligns with the community's needs and concerns

We live in a peaceful part of Santa Monica, where every morning we wake up to the sound of birds and enjoy the beauty of nature around us. The environment, wildlife, and sense of calm here are not just part of our daily life — they are what make this neighborhood so special.

But now this development is threatening to destroy that peace. The project not only ignores the environmental impact and wildlife habitat, but also completely changes the character of our community.

Many families — especially those who moved here after losing their homes to fires — came to Santa Monica to rebuild their lives, to give their children a safe and peaceful childhood. Instead of protecting this, the project is ruining the chance to start fresh.

We cannot let a high-density building, without proper studies, without consideration for traffic, parking, or air quality, take away the peace of our community and the future of our families.

Now, we are shocked and deeply concerned to learn that a 71-unit high-density development is being pushed forward right across from our building, with only 61 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩parking spaces for 71 residential units.

This project will directly impact the lives of hundreds of nearby residents.

Here’s why we strongly oppose this development:

Severe Parking Shortage:
With more units than parking spots, residents will overflow onto the already overburdened street parking. This will disrupt access for existing families, visitors, and emergency services.
Traffic Congestion and Safety Hazards:
The intersection and surrounding streets are already dangerously congested, especially during school drop-offs and work hours. Adding dozens of vehicles will increase the risk of accidents.
Health and Environmental Risks:
There are over 100 residential units on Dirac Street directly facing the proposed construction site. The area is already struggling with unstable soil conditions and buckling roads.
During and after construction, toxic materials such as vinyl dust and airborne particles may seriously impact children, the elderly, and residents with asthma or respiratory issues.
Lack of Transparency and Community Engagement:
This development has been progressing without sufficient public notification or community input. Many residents feel blindsided and ignored.

We are not opposing affordable housing. But this particular overloaded, under-planned high-density project is being forced into an area that lacks the infrastructure to support it — and it’s being done at the expense of the safety and wellbeing of current residents.

📍We respectfully urge local city officials and planning authorities to:

Immediately halt this project until proper environmental and traffic studies are conducted;
Organize a public hearing with residents directly impacted;
Reassess the zoning and parking regulations to ensure this community is not overwhelmed.
