Delancey Street Bike Lanes

The Issue

"Delancey is one of the most dangerous streets in the city."
According to Transportation Alternatives, on average, over 75 pedestrians and cyclists are hit by cars on Delancey Street every year.

Biking in Manhattan and Brooklyn has gotten substantially safer and more accessible thanks to the great work the City and the Mayor have done to integrate safe bicycle lanes on many streets.

However, getting between the two boroughs is extremely hazardous, highly dangerous, and regularly puts lives at risk. The reason? Delancey Street on the Lower East Side.

Delancey Street is the direct access point to one of the highest bike trafficked areas in all of NYC: The Williamsburg Bridge. Commuters, tourists, recreational cyclists -- all of them must either brave the chaotic traffic, careening towards the bridge's entrance, or enter directly into the cars and trucks shooting off the bridge. Without a bike lane to keep them out of the way of this traffic, cyclists are in constant danger.

Recently, the city has made efforts to make the entrance of the Williamsburg Bridge safer for cyclists and pedestrians. However, these safety measures are vastly incomplete, and pointless unless the street that gets them to and from the safer bridge is also safe.

I propose that the City of New York immediately begins installing safe bicycle lanes on Delancey Street. The street already has a small park in the center divide, which would make a prime spot for a safe cycle path, completely separate from traffic. Inserting lanes in the center would relieve drivers of having to share lanes with cyclists, and would not take an entire lane space from them.

Creating bicycle lanes on Delancey Street will save lives and avoid needless damage by keeping cyclists safe, traffic efficient and drivers happy.
