Defund Congress During Shutdowns

The Issue

As a voting US CITIZEN, I expect our elected officials to do their job and fulfill their responsibilities. When they fail to do so, it is not only a breach of trust but also a disservice to the American people who rely on them for effective governance. This petition seeks to address the issue of governmental shutdowns by advocating for the defunding of Congress during these periods.

Personal Story:
I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of governmental shutdowns on our nation and its citizens. As an employee in a government-funded program, I experienced financial uncertainty and stress during such times. It was disheartening to see how political disagreements could disrupt essential services and jeopardize the livelihoods of hardworking individuals like myself.

Shutdowns not only impact federal employees but also have far-reaching consequences for businesses, contractors, and ordinary Americans who rely on government programs and services. The inability of Congress to pass necessary legislation during these periods leads to economic instability, delays in vital public projects, and undermines public trust in our democratic system.

Facts & Statistics:
1. According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), there have been 21 government shutdowns since 1976.
2. The longest government shutdown in U.S. history occurred from December 22, 2018, until January 25, 2019 - lasting for a total of 35 days.
3. A report by S&P Global estimated that the 35-day partial government shutdown cost the U.S economy approximately $11 billion.
4. During this same period, around 800,000 federal workers were furloughed or forced to work without pay.

Petition Objective:
We believe that it is time for accountability within Congress when it comes to governmental shutdowns. Our elected officials should be held responsible for their failure to reach timely agreements on funding bills that keep our government operational.

By defunding Congress during shutdowns, we propose that the salaries of all members of Congress be suspended until they fulfill their duties and pass necessary legislation to reopen the government. This action will serve as a strong incentive for our elected officials to prioritize the needs of the American people over political disagreements.

We understand that this proposal may require legislative changes, but it is essential to hold our representatives accountable for their actions or lack thereof. It is time for Congress to feel the same financial burden and uncertainty that hardworking Americans face during these periods.

Sign this petition if you believe it is time to defund Congress during governmental shutdowns and demand accountability from our elected officials. Together, we can push for meaningful change and ensure that our government remains functional even in times of political disagreement.
