Defuel Red Hill by the end of the year

Defuel Red Hill by the end of the year
The Issue
The Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility is a military fueling station on the island of Oahu that supports U.S. military operations. The Red Hill facility consists of 20 steel lined tanks that can hold up to 12.5 million gallons of fuel in each of them. Overall the entire facility can hold up to 250 million gallons of fuel but has released thousands of gallons of fuel into the environment since it's opening in the 1940's. In late 2021 an unknown amount of jet fuel (estimated around 19,000 gallons) leaked into the Navy's water system and affected 93,000 residents. The navy tried to convince residents that the water was just fine but we knew from the very beginning that that wasn't true as we've had to see our local families suffer nausea, headaches, rashes and even worse in the hands of the Navy's carelessness. After our community fought tirelessly protesting, petitioning, and organizing, on March 7th the Secretary of Defense conceded to our demands, and ordered the massive , WWll-era Red Hill Bulk Fuel Facility to be defueled and shut down. However, we have now learned that this "ticking time bomb" that has already poisoned thousands of people is so decrepit that hundreds of repairs are necessary, just to safely remove the well over 100,000,000 gallons of fuel remaining in its 25-story tall fuel tanks. Meanwhile, O'ahu's primary drinking water source is still threatened with catastrophic contamination , families on the Navy's water system are still reporting health issues and and fuel sheens in their supposedly "safe" tap water, and nothing assures us that the Navy and Department of Defense will treat this situation as the environmental, humanitarian, and national security emergency it truly is. We cannot stop fighting until the Navy takes full responsibility for this crisis and we are protected from the threat of total catastrophe, before it is too late.
The main goals of this petition are:
- To demand that Navy and Department of Defense leaders make defueling the Red Hill Bulk Fuel facility the number one priority in Hawai'i, to be completed by the end of this year;
- To demand that families reporting ongoing contamination issues have alternative water sources and/or lodging until their water is guaranteed to be safe; and
- To demand that local Navy leaders meet regularly and directly with the community whose water and way of life remains in jeopardy, until this crisis is resolved.
