Ban the sale, use and possession of prong collars in the UK

The Issue

It's 2020.

There are kinder, more effective and less physically and mentally risky ways to teach dogs to walk nicely.

Prong collars consist of a metal or plastic collar with blunt spikes or prongs turning inwards in a martingale like design.

Typically they will be shoved up behind the dogs ears over the neck.

A dogs neck is more sensitive than ours and has thinner skin layers.

They work by tightening and pressing into the dogs neck causing severe discomfort and pain when the dog is corrected or the dog pulls into it to discourage pulling.

Prong collars can cause severe physical and mental injuries including extremely dangerous behaviour supression which could cause the dog wearing it to become a bite risk towards people or other dogs due to unintended consequences of its use and redirection of anger/frustration/fear.

Even the most elite firearms response dog teams being deployed into the most dangerous and risky scenarios in the UK in the police and military no longer use them due to the above legitimate and evidenced concerns.

All leading assistance dog charities actively discourage dog and handler teams in the UK from using them.

There is no place for pain or fear in Dog Training, so I am asking Boris Johnson and DEFRA to get the sale, use and possession of these hideous devices made illegal via an explicit clause in extension to the Animal Welfare Act.
