Define the term "Wild / Sustainably Caught" to exclude factory trawled fish
The Issue
While Trolling boats are small-scale and catch fish by hand with lines, Factory Trawling boats drag nets on the sea floor, erasing ecosystems and are legally allowed high amounts of "bycatch" of other non-target species, driving fish populations towards extinction. Advertising of pollock at fast food chains claim that Alaskan Pollock is "Sustainably Wild Caught" but this is far from true. Consumers are led to feel good about supporting these factories at sea run by large corporations. This is not fair to all the small-scale fishermen who really are sustainably catching fish. Even subsistence users are affected by fishery closures resulting from population crashes due to Trawl Bycatch.
NOAA, the regulating body for this fishery, is using Alaskan tax dollars to promote pelagic trawl, which is shown to be dragging on the seafloor up to 100% of the time, as eco-friendly. This is an insult to our intelligence.
If Trident Seafoods is allowed to continue with ad campaigns that paint its methods as sustainable, other industries will also mislead the consumers and behind those scenes the consumers will be supporting a monolith that they think they are avoiding by believing the advertisements.
This has been going on for too long. Alaskan people are now seeing new fishery closures of salmon, halibut, and crab, some of the main casualties of bycatch policy, while Trawl bycatch allowances remain unchecked. If consumers continue to be misled, this behemoth will continue to grow, and ordinary people who care about sustainability will be misled into sustaining only ecosystem destruction and fish population reduction.
