The Issue

Keziah Ridgeway is a respected Black Muslim teacher who spent years educating students at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. She taught African American history. She won awards. She stood up for her students. And for that, she was punished.

After expressing support for Palestinian rights and raising concerns about Islamophobia in her school, Ridgeway was suspended without pay and pulled from her classroom for eight months. A smear campaign labeled her an antisemite. Her personal information was leaked. She received death threats. While Ridgeway was under attack, the school district took no steps to protect her. Instead, it investigated her.

Now she is suing the School District of Philadelphia for discrimination, retaliation, and violating her rights to free speech and religious freedom. What happened to her is not just a personal injustice. It is a warning to every educator who dares to speak out, to every Muslim teacher who wants to feel safe, and to every student who deserves to learn from someone who looks like them and tells the truth.

The district must acknowledge what happened and act. It must ensure that no teacher faces harassment or career-ending punishment simply for advocating human rights or being visibly Muslim in the classroom.

This is a moment to choose between silence and justice. Keziah Ridgeway deserves better. Her students deserve better. Public schools in Philadelphia must be places where all educators are free to teach without fear.
