Decker Lake (aka Lake Walter Long) located in Austin, Texas is a popular destination for largemouth bass and hybrid striped bass anglers from the area.  The lake has been highly managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for these species.  Unfortunately, access to the fishery is becoming limited because of chronic low water conditions in the late-summer and fall.  Under these conditions the only ramp on the lake becomes difficult to use and/or is unusable.  While the ramp in past years has remained open under these conditions, and anglers launched at their own risk, the City of Austin abruptly closed the ramp on October 1, 2023.   This closure occurred even though boats were still successfully launching.  While the City of Austin has the ability to pump water into the reservoir from the Colorado River that water is typically not available at the time of year the lake needs it the most (late-summer and early fall).  We ask that the City of Austin work with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Boat Ramp Program to provide funding for deepening/improving the ramp so public access is more available year-round.  We also ask that this project be completed in a timely manner.
