Decriminalize Mental Health and Redirect Funding in Springfield, MA

Decriminalize Mental Health and Redirect Funding in Springfield, MA
The Issue
Residents of Springfield, MA, our community is suffering due to the criminalization of mental health disorders and disabilities. This approach not only stigmatizes those struggling with their mental health but also poses a risk to vulnerable communities in regard to mass incarceration.
Springfield Police Department currently holds responsibility for addressing mental health crises - such as obtaining Behavioral Health Network, Inc. resources, an arrangement that is both inappropriate and dangerous. Law enforcement officers are not trained mental healthcare professionals; they are ill-equipped to handle such sensitive situations effectively.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that at least 1 in 5 adults experiences mental illness each year, yet our city's response has been punitive rather than therapeutic. It's time we address this issue as a public health crisis rather than a criminal one.
We propose reallocating funds from the police department towards establishing more robust community-based mental health resources and trauma centers. Additionally, we propose the expansion of inpatient mental health hospitals rather than criminalization. These facilities would provide much-needed support for individuals experiencing crises while reducing unnecessary interactions with law enforcement.
By decriminalizing mental health in Springfield, we can create safer environments for all residents while ensuring those who need help receive it from qualified professionals instead of facing potential incarceration.
Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a healthier, more compassionate Springfield where everyone has access to the mental health care they need without fear of punishment or stigma.
